Panthers End Devils’ Eight-Game Streak

Defenseman Ed Jovanovski scored his second goal of game with 51.9 seconds left in overtime and the Florida Panthers ended the New Jersey Devils’ team-record eight-game winning streak, 2-1, Saturday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

John Vanbiesbrouck had 28 saves, including a close-in shot by Patrik Elias early in the overtime, in handing New Jersey its first loss since Nov. 4. The Devils began their winning streak the next day against Florida.

San Jose 4, Washington 2--The Sharks scored on three of their first six shots and Kelly Hrudey had 32 saves as the San Jose stretched its winning streak to three by beating the Capitals at Landover, Md.

Chris Simon had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, whose four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) came to an end.

Dallas 2, Boston 0--Goals by Jamie Langenbrunner on a power play with 12 seconds left in the second period and Pat Verbeek in the third gave the Stars the victory at Boston as the Bruins suffered their second shutout in three days.

Pittsburgh 4, N.Y. Rangers 3--Jaromir Jagr returned to the Penguin lineup after sitting out four games and scored a fluke goal 25 seconds into overtime at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are unbeaten in four games (3-0-1) since an 0-4-2 streak. The Rangers lost for the first time in overtime after tying seven other games.

Buffalo 6, N.Y. Islanders 1--Jason Dawe and Donald Audette scored two goals apiece, and Buffalo goaltender Dominik Hasek earned his first home victory in a month.

Dawe scored his team-leading 12th and 13th goals in the first two periods as the Sabres won two in a row for only the second time this season.

Tampa Bay 4, Calgary 3--Rob Zamuner scored twice, including the game-winning goal at Tampa, Fla., as the Lightning won for the second consecutive time after a 16-game winless streak.

Daren Puppa stopped 20 Flames’ shots and Mikael Nylander scored twice for Calgary.

Edmonton 1, Ottawa 0--The first goal of Mike Watt’s career was the only goal in the Oilers’ victory over the Senators at Kanata, Canada.

Watt, 21, took Jason Arnott’s pass from the corner and beat goaltender Damian Rhodes to the stick side with 4:52 left in the third period.

Detroit 5, Montreal 2--Tomas Holmstrom scored twice in the second period and added an assist to lift the Red Wings over the Canadiens at Montreal.

Phoenix 2, Toronto 0--Shane Doan scored a second-period goal, and Nikolai Khabibulin made it stand up with his second shutout this season against Toronto at Phoenix.

Khabibulin stopped 28 shots to record his 11th career shutout. Three have come in his last four starts against the Maple Leafs, including a 3-0 victory in Toronto on Nov. 8.

Chicago 5, Vancouver 4--Greg Johnson scored 1:22 into overtime as the Blackhawks overcame a two-goal third-period deficit at Vancouver, Canada.

Johnson, who finished with two goals and an assist, was parked on top of the crease when he redirected Steve Dubinsky’s pass from the right boards for the game-winner.
