Netanyahu’s Visit

Re “Netanyahu Visit Raises Jewish Issues,” Nov. 18:

The Rabbinical Council of California is the umbrella organization of the Orthodox synagogues of Southern California, and one of the largest regional rabbinical organizations in the U.S. The slanted and erroneous portrayal of Aish HaTorah as a fringe group compels us to respond. Aish HaTorah is a mainstream, apolitical, educational organization that forges close ties with students and supporters, drawing Jews of all denomi- nations--Reform, Conservative and Orthodox--closer to their heritage.

Re “Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu,” Commentary, Nov. 16:

Harvey Fields states the issue [unity among branches of Judaism] clearly. The problem is he is preaching to the choir. Mainstream Judaism understands the issues. However, the Israelis do not fully comprehend the core issues or what is at stake. They are the ones we should be educating; the Reform and Conservative movements have done a poor job in that area. If there were more Rabbi Fields in Israel to carry the message, then Judaism would be better served. Orthodoxy deserves a vote, but not a veto.
