School District Considers Expansion of El Morro

Share

Members of the Laguna Beach Unified School District board will meet today to hear how much it would cost to expand El Morro Elementary School.

Expansion is necessary to accommodate about 342 students expected to enroll in the school district because of development along Newport Coast, officials said. Architects for the developer, the Irvine Co., and the school district will be on hand to discuss the possible project.

About half of the new students would attend El Morro, said Steven Rabago, a school board member. The remaining students would be divided among the district’s middle and high schools.

The school board has until January to decide whether to expand the school. Board members also could seek to change the district’s boundaries so the students would attend campuses in the Newport-Mesa Unified School district.

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Laguna Beach Unified School District Education Center, 550 Blumont St. Information: (714) 497-7700.
