Private School Denied Permit in Strip Mall

Share

Planning commissioners this week denied a request from a private school to continue operating in a strip mall on East Orangethorpe Avenue.

Crown Private School moved into the retail center last summer but needed to secure an operating permit from the city.

In denying the permit, commissioners said the school is too close to homes and lacks enough play area for students. City planners had recommended the denial.

Owner T.C. Crownover requested approval to keep the 6,876-square-foot private elementary school in the mall and allow up to 150 students, saying she had made a substantial investment to improve the property.

She said she will appeal the commission’s decision to the City Council.
