Van Exel’s Knee Rested and Tested

Share

Nick Van Exel, his playing time having been cut this season to reduce wear on the bothersome left knee, went 39 minutes Wednesday at Boston because he was needed to ensure stability against the Celtics’ swarming defense. And, just as importantly, because he was able.

“I feel fine,” he said. “My knee is fine.”

It is also a concern, which is why Coach Del Harris decided in camp to ration Van Exel’s minutes, hoping to avoid a repeat of last season when his point guard averaged a career-high 37.2 minutes and then was forced play in pain through the postseason. Through the first 12 games of 1997-98, Van Exel was at 31.5, aided by the extra rest that came with the numerous early blowouts. Against the Celtics, he steered the Lakers through the treacherous waters of a trapping defense that had help cause 15 turnovers before intermission. Twice Harris checked with Van Exel to make sure he was physically up to it, and twice he got the same response.

On a night when the Lakers committed 23 turnovers, four more than any other game and eight above their average, Van Exel had only one. Backup Derek Fisher had none in nine minutes.
