Playoff Double for UCLA Soccer

The UCLA men’s and women’s soccer teams--a combined 37-4 this season--will be out to achieve a weekend sweep when they play Washington and Notre Dame, respectively, in the NCAA playoffs.

The women’s team, coached by Joy Fawcett, plays the Fighting Irish today at 10 a.m. PST in South Bend in a quarterfinal match. Notre Dame, the NCAA champion in 1995, is 22-0-1. The Bruins are 19-2 and riding a 12-game winning streak.

On Sunday at 2 p.m. at Spaulding Field on the UCLA campus, the Bruin men’s team (18-2) plays the Huskies (15-2-2) in a second-round game.

The fifth-seeded Bruins will be seeking their 20th consecutive victory at home. They shut out Santa Clara, 3-0, in the first round on goals by midfielder Nick Paneno, forward Martin Bruno and striker Seth George.

George has a team-high 13 goals and 10 assists this season; the Bruins have outscored their opponents, 61-13.

Washington is coached by Dean Wurzberger, a former UCLA assistant under Sigi Schmid, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coach of the year for the third consecutive season.
