Homework Centers to Open in 2 Areas

A $46,000 federal grant will enable Ojai’s SchooLinks Homework Center program to expand to Oak View and Meiners Oaks.

The two new after-school homework centers will offer children tutorial assistance to help complete homework assignments starting in mid-October. The program originated in 1996 at the Ojai Library.

The centers will be staffed by trained student and adult volunteers from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, when school is in session.

The one-year grant will cover the cost of supervision and staffing as well as the purchase of a computer and software for each of the two centers.

“There is a lot of competition statewide for these limited funds and we are very honored and pleased that our proposal to expand the privately financed SchooLinks Homework Center to other Ojai Valley locations has been selected,” said Donna Roff, director of children’s services for the Ventura County Library Services Agency.

The Ojai Valley Library Foundation has plans for fund-raising activities to support all three centers after the grant money runs out.
