Drug Lab Found After Anaheim Blast
Firefighters responding to a report of an explosion found a drug lab inside an apartment Tuesday, authorities said.
A blast blew out the windows of an apartment about 5:40 p.m. in the 200 block of North East Street, Fire Department spokeswoman Tabby Cato said. Two people fled, she said, but not before locking the door behind them, said Gary Hudson, special agent supervisor with the state Department of Justice.
Neighbors called 911 and doused the blaze in the kitchen themselves, Cato said.
Cato said firefighters called police and the department’s hazardous-materials team after they discovered a pseudo-ephedrine extraction lab, in which chemicals were taken from over-the-counter drugs to make methamphetamine.
Investigators believe a spark ignited some of the volatile chemicals used to make the narcotic.
“They really got off easy,” Hudson said. “The entire complex could have burned.”
