Charity to Celebrate $5-Million Fund-Raiser
Imagine burning your mortgage.
That’s what Newport-Mesa Assistance League volunteers will do today during a party for supporters who helped them raise $5 million in five years to pay off their building at 2220 Fairview Road.
The Assistance League is a national organization that provides support for underprivileged women and children.
The Newport-Mesa chapter provides a dental clinic, thrift store, consignment shop and other services to struggling families.
More than 700 women are members of the local chapter. Men cannot join.
About 200 key fund-raisers are expected at tonight’s invitation-only event.
Volunteers said firefighters will be on hand to make sure their bank note is safely burned.
