The City Council has approved a $1.6-million make-over for the city’s downtown that calls for the narrowing of Azusa Avenue, landscaping, teak benches and ornate lighting.

The project, approved by the council Wednesday night, will stretch between Fifth and Ninth avenues, with work beginning as early as next spring.

“We want to make the downtown attractive,” said Mayor Cristina Madrid. “We want it to be a destination for people.”

Azusa Avenue, a one-way street with three lanes, will be narrowed to two lanes and parking will be added in front of the businesses, she said.

Madrid said the city would attempt to lure more businesses to the area and talks are underway to build a movie theater. But she said the city is counting on the service industry to boost the strip with Azusa Pacific University’s Nursing School plan to open a wellness clinic in the area.
