Mexican officials said Friday that they have won the extradition of former prosecutor Pablo Chapa Bezanilla from Spain and that he will probably be returned within days.

Chapa Bezanilla fled to Spain earlier this year after investigators said he allegedly paid informants to plant human remains at the house of the brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.

Mexico has sought Chapa Bezanilla’s extradition using a lengthy legal procedure, rather than offering a swap of suspected Basque separatists held in Mexico, Atty. Gen. Jorge Madrazo Cuellar said.

Authorities in Madrid confirmed that Chapa Bezanilla will be extradited but said they do not know exactly when he will leave.

Chapa Bezanilla, who was arrested in May, made headlines in October 1996 when he announced that he found skeletal remains buried at the home of Raul Salinas, brother of the former president.

Chapa Bezanilla is accused of falsifying evidence in a bid to incriminate Raul Salinas in the murder of a missing senator.
