Multiculturalism in Education Is Topic

Share

How multicultural education can bring together Los Angeles’ diverse population will be discussed in a lecture by Jorge Mancillas at Mission College on Thursday.

Mancillas, a former UCLA assistant professor of biology who now works as a district representative for state Sen. Tom Hayden (D-Los Angeles), organized last year’s hunger strike in support of UCLA’s Chicano studies program.

Mancillas will trace the origins of ethnic differences among humans and discuss how diverse populations can come together through education, Mission officials said.

Originally from Ensenada in Baja California, Mancillas holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC Berkeley in 1972 and a doctorate in neuroscience from UC San Diego in 1983.

In addition to his work as a scientist, Mancillas has been active in causes ranging from human rights and toxic pollution to democracy in Mexico.

The free public talk, the second in Mission College’s fall lecture series on “Unity in Diversity,” will begin at 7 p.m. in Mission’s Campus Center. For more information, call (818) 364-7766.
