Don King Donates $100,000 to Shelter
Boxing promoter Don King has donated $100,000 to a 4-year-old women’s and children’s shelter in South-Central Los Angeles.
The shelter was renamed in King’s honor at a ceremony last week. The facility has 100 beds in dormitory settings, a community room and counselors for those seeking help with drug abuse, said Charles Dudley, spokesman and program director for the American Philanthropy Assn., a nonprofit group that runs two other shelters in Los Angeles.
The shelter was named after King because he symbolized someone “who came from a hard-core ghetto to rise to the highest part of the community,” Dudley said Monday.
