Long Wait for Citizenship

Share

Your Sept. 26 editorial does not even begin to address the horror of having to deal with the INS in seeking resolution to becoming a citizen.

My wife had her citizenship tests and interview at Citizenship USA last Oct. 31, passed and was told that the process would take six months to be sworn in. After the six months had elapsed, I called the INS and was told that the wait was eight to 10 months. After 10 months I again called the INS and was told the process was now 12 months. I inquired at that time, “What is taking so long?” I was given what I am sure is the standard answer, “Due to the high number of applications, blah, blah, blah.” I was assured that her case would be handled in the order in which it was received.

I know for a fact that this is not true. I know of three people who had their test and interview in January 1997, two were sworn in in July and the other in August. Either the INS is telling us lies or doesn’t have a clue as to what’s going on. In any case, someone with authority should investigate and some heads should roll.
