Names of Vietnam’s War Dead to Be Read Aloud; Volunteers Sought

Share

An ambitious plan to read the names of all American men and women who died in the Vietnam War needs only one thing--volunteers.

About 500 people will be needed to call out the names of 58,169 Americans who lost their lives in the war. The reading will be done over about 96 hours starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 8 and concluding at noon on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

“The Vietnam War was not very popular in America, but it doesn’t lessen the bravery and dedication of these people who served and gave their all,” said Mayor William S. Craycraft, a Vietnam veteran who is heading the program.

The reading will be held in the new Mission Viejo Library courtyard at La Paz Road and Marguerite Parkway. Each volunteer will read names for an hour. The city particularly needs volunteers who are willing to come in the early-morning hours.

Those who want to participate should call (714) 470-3043 and leave their name, phone number and a preference for reading in the morning or evening hours.
