OCC Enrolls More Overseas Students

Share

Orange Coast College this fall enrolled 816 international students--a 201-student leap over last year.

Colleges generally seek overseas students because they pay higher fees and bring worldwide perspective to the classroom. The goal at the campus is to enroll 850 international students by 2000.

Campus officials said overseas students come to the college because of its reputation for transferring students to four-year colleges and universities--the goal of about 80% who enroll.

About 70% of foreign students come to Orange Coast College from Asia; 13% from Europe; 5.5% from the Middle East; and 4.2% from Latin America.

Japan leads countries this year with 348 students. Korea follows with 90 students and Taiwan with 54. Sweden ranks first among European countries with 52.
