Teaching Spanish to Kids Is Seminar Topic

Share

Parents and teachers interested in teaching children to speak Spanish are invited to take part in a three-hour seminar at Ventura College.

Using songs, poetry and art, participants will learn how to teach children the basics of the language.

Participants do not already need to know Spanish to take advantage of the teaching method.

“To learn we must experience what is being taught,” said Maricarmen Ohara, the seminar instructor and a longtime Spanish professor at Ventura College.

“The younger we are, the faster we learn.”

The seminar and materials, which draw on Ohara’s experiences growing up in a poor Bolivian town, include a text with more than 100 pages for coloring to more fully involve the child.

Ohara will offer the seminar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Building K, Room 1.

The cost is $30 for the seminar and an additional $30 for materials.

For more information or to register in advance, call 654-6459.

Registration is also available the day of the seminar starting at 9:30 a.m.
