An author whose family once owned Santa Cruz Island will sign copies of his book about the storied scrap of land Saturday afternoon.
John Gherini, great-grandson of a French immigrant who controlled the island in the 1880s, will sign “Santa Cruz Island: A History of Conflict and Diversity” at 1 p.m. at the Ventura County Museum of History and Art.
The book, on sale at the museum gift shop, explores the history of Santa Cruz Island’s many residents and their struggles to maintain control of the land. Gherini’s family sold the bulk of the island to the Stanton family in 1937, according to his book. The family’s remaining 10% of the island was recently bought by the National Park Service and is now part of Channel Islands National Park.
The Ventura County Museum of History and Art is at 100 E. Main St. in Ventura.
