Plans Moving Ahead for Complex, Developer Says

Plans for a 120,000-square-foot “urban village” in Westwood combining retail stores and a movie theater are moving forward, the project’s developer said Wednesday.
Douglas S. Brown, co-managing partner of Regent Properties, said his company is in escrow for the future site of Westwood Marketplace, which will take up nearly a city block at the west end of Westwood Village.
Brown would not disclose the final price of the property, which is bounded by Gayley, Weyburn and Broxton avenues. The land is currently owned by the Borinstein family of Westwood.
Brown said he expects to get city approval for the project in 12 to 14 months. Westwood Marketplace, he said, will have two stories of upscale shops and restaurants, plus a movie theater.
He said the development would include open spaces and fountains and would open onto the street. Parking will be underground.
Laura Lake, president of the Friends of Westwood neighborhood association, said the Beverly Hills-based developer has so far satisfied the community’s concerns about the project.
“It’s an appropriately scaled project and it doesn’t add more movie seats to the Village,” Lake said.
Five screens at theaters on Gayley and Broxton will be replaced by the new Westwood Marketplace theater, Brown said.
