Back-to-Basics Curriculum Through Grade 8 Proposed

The entire school day would be devoted to reading and math for students in Santa Ana’s elementary and middle schools under a proposal to adopt a back-to-basics curriculum, officials said this week.

About 60% of the school day, or approximately 160 minutes, would target reading. The rest of the day, or about 100 minutes, would focus on math.

The Santa Ana Unified School District, however, must meet a state requirement for physical education. Deputy Supt. Joe Tafoya said the district could ask for a waiver or incorporate reading and math into physical education.

Subjects such as music might be taught after school, he said.

The proposal, which could go before the school board for a formal vote Nov. 10, would not affect high school classes.
