School Panel to Consider Instruction Guidelines

Share

A school committee will consider whether a policy or guidelines are needed on how many minutes should be spent teaching basic subjects in Fullerton School District elementary schools.

District Trustee Kim Guth proposed drafting a policy that would require teachers to spend a minimum number of minutes per day teaching reading and language arts.

Some parents opposed the proposal, saying rigid guidelines might prevent field trips, arts activities and the creative methods used by teachers to integrate subjects, such as giving a math lesson while students are studying music.

Guth’s board colleagues said curriculum guidelines already are in place for teachers to follow. But they agreed to let the curriculum steering committee study Guth’s proposal further.

Meanwhile, principals are being told to remind teachers about the district’s existing guidelines, officials said.
