Costa Mesa Rallies in Fourth Quarter

Costa Mesa scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Aliso Niguel, 18-7, in a Pacific Coast League opener Thursday night at Newport Harbor High.

Costa Mesa pulled to within, 7-5, with 7 minutes 38 seconds left in the game, tackling Wolverine quarterback Jared Hill in the end zone for a safety.

The Mustangs (6-0, 1-0) then took the lead for good when linebacker David Weir recovered an Aliso Niguel fumble and took it in for a 25-yard touchdown and a 12-7 lead with 5:44 left. Steve Herzog capped the scoring with a four-yard run with 2:49 left.

Rovinn Sou took over the county lead in interceptions with his seventh for Costa Mesa.

Aliso Niguel (1-5, 0-1) had taken a 7-3 lead lead with 37 seconds left in the first half, when Jason Moore score on a 59-yard pass play from Hill.

Vince Hamade carried 22 times for 172 yards for Costa Mesa.
