Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, in his first U.S. visit as spiritual leader of 250 million Orthodox Christians, embarked on a 16-city tour Sunday vowing to learn about the American dream and praising the “splendid mosaic of faith” of his church here.

His black robes swirling in a rain-swept wind, the “first among equals” of Orthodox patriarchs worldwide quickly moved inside a hangar where he was greeted by about 500 faithful waving patriarchal flags.

In the opening address of his monthlong visit, Bartholomew said his spiritual mission echoes America’s commitment to freedom, justice and opportunity for all.

“We look forward to the coming days when we shall have occasion to experience the rich diversity of America, as we journey through her brilliant landscapes,” Bartholomew said. “And it is with fatherly joy that we commence our voyage across this great land.”

Bartholomew was greeted at the airport by Mary French, the U.S. chief of protocol, and in the next few days will meet with President Clinton and receive a Congressional Gold Medal. In Santa Barbara, he will participate in a major conference on the environment, one of his signature issues, before returning to patriarchate headquarters in Istanbul. He is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in the United States.
