Bernard N. Pavelko; Korean War Veteran

Bernard N. Pavelko, a Korean War veteran who served as Exalted Ruler of Ventura Elks Lodge 1430, died Saturday. He was 65.

Pavelko was born April 16, 1932, in Donora, Pa. After serving in the Korean conflict, he became a quality control inspector for Lockheed in Van Nuys.

In 1991, Pavelko moved to Ventura, where he became active in American Legion Post 339; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1679, the Oddfellows and the Moose Lodge.

He traveled the world and enjoyed describing his adventures while on safari in Africa. He was something of a daredevil who enjoyed para-sailing and once went bungee jumping in Mexico.

An avid football fan, Pavelko also loved the arts and could often be found attending plays or musicals.

Pavelko is survived by his brother, Frank, of Mountain View, and his longtime companion, Anne Hallbauer.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. Burial will be in the family plot at St. Dominic’s Cemetery in Donora, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to Ventura Elks Lodge 1430, 11 S. Ash St., Ventura 93001.
