Police, YWCA to Offer Free Self-Defense Courses
The YWCA and the Santa Monica Police Department are co-sponsoring a free self-defense class today from 1 to 4 p.m. and again from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
“This is a class in defensive tactics, not the martial arts,” said Sgt. Betsy Stratton. Students “might not be able to use the exact technique after one class. But we hope it gives them enough self-confidence to carry themselves better--and so avoid being victimized,” she said.
The program, which is based on instinctive moves, is intended to help reduce the number of targets, she said.
