Fish Help Lure Visitors to Reopened Pier
The fish have been helping celebrate Saturday’s reopening of the Venice pier by “biting like crazy,” said Kathleen Chan, pier project manager for the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
Chan said that El Nino currents, which have made for good fishing along the coast, also have contributed to the pier’s resurgent popularity for fishing.
Restored over the past year for $4.5 million, the pier had been closed for a decade, but is now open every day from 5 a.m. to midnight.
Chan said the pier’s new light fixtures, which are pointed in the middle, were designed to keep sea gulls from landing on them. Similar fixtures will soon adorn Venice’s Ocean Front Walk, part of a Venice Beach upgrade. The upgrade also will include rehabilitation of beach restrooms.
Pier rededication ceremonies will be held in about two weeks.
