Girl Raped After Getting Ride From Stranger

Police repeated a long-standing warning Wednesday about accepting rides from strangers after a 14-year-old girl was raped by a motorist who picked up the girl and her sister.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, the girl and her 16-year-old sister were waiting at a downtown Pomona bus stop when a man in a blue-gray Datsun 240Z or Mazda RX-7 sports car pulled up and offered them a ride and they accepted, police said.

The suspect drove the girls to the 3100 block of North Garey Avenue, where they had asked to be taken. The older sister got out of the car but before the younger girl could exit, the suspect drove off, said Sgt. Michael J. Ervin Sr.

The suspect drove to an unknown neighboring community with the girl still in the car, Ervin said. During the trip, the suspect forced the girl to the car floor so she could not see where they were going, police said.

When the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect raped the girl, police said. He then drove back to Pomona and dropped her off. She alerted authorities and was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released.

Police said the suspect is described as possibly a Latino, between 35 and 40 years old, with short, dark hair and a hoop earring.
