White House Admits Line-Item Veto Error
The administration acknowledged that President Clinton mistakenly vetoed some items in a military-construction appropriations bill and pledged to help lawmakers restore them. In a letter to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Clinton’s budget director, Franklin D. Raines, conceded that several projects--he didn’t say how many--had been mistakenly vetoed. Angered over Clinton’s rejection of 38 projects in the $287-million bill, Republicans were preparing legislation aimed at overriding the vetoes. But Raines said the administration would “strongly oppose” any effort to reverse Clinton’s line-item vetoes.
