Policeman Convicted of Murder in Fight Over Parking Space
A New York City police officer who shot a man to death in an off-duty argument over a deli’s parking space was convicted of murder Friday.
Jurors rejected officer Richard D. DiGuglielmo’s claim that the victim was about to attack his father with a baseball bat. When the officer heard the verdict, he closed his eyes and hung his head.
DiGuglielmo’s bail was revoked pending a Dec. 15 sentencing at which he could get 25 years to life in prison. He was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.
The victim, Charles Campbell, 37, had gotten into a fight with members of the DiGuglielmo family in October 1996 outside their deli when he used its “patrons only” parking space and went to another business.
Campbell hit DiGuglielmo’s father in the knee with a baseball bat. The son testified that he feared for his father’s life when he fired, but most witnesses said Campbell was retreating.
