From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A woman who was found guilty of starving her 4-year-old daughter to death was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Carla Lockwood, 33, told police at the time of her arrest that she had hated the child since she was born and kept her confined to a crib, feeding her only scraps because the little girl, Nadine, resembled her father. Lockwood pleaded guilty last month to second-degree depraved murder. Lockwood showed no emotion when she was sentenced. “The media already created a monster of me, but I’m a very loving, caring woman . . . . I love all of my children,” she whispered. Lockwood has 10 other children that range in age from 1 to 14 and are all in foster care, officials said. The child died Aug. 31, 1996, weighing just 15 1/2 pounds, or the average weight of a 6-month-old baby, prosecutors said. The girl’s death sparked an investigation into New York City’s social services agencies, which failed to respond to earlier complaints that the child was malnourished.
