Unabomber defendant Theodore J. Kaczynski has refused to submit to a court-ordered psychiatric examination, federal authorities said Friday.

Kaczynski, 55, was scheduled to begin seven days of tests Saturday at the federal prison in Dublin.

But Kaczynski’s defense team said Friday in a conference call with U.S. District Judge Garland Burrell Jr. that Kaczynski refused to submit to the tests, which had been sought by prosecutors.

Lead prosecutor Robert Cleary urged Burrell on Sept. 29 to block the defense from introducing psychiatric evidence on Kaczynski’s behalf during the trial, unless he submitted to the government’s testing.

The trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 12. Kaczynski has pleaded not guilty to a 10-count indictment accusing him of using handmade bombs to kill a computer store owner and a lobbyist in Sacramento, and injure two others. He faces the death penalty if convicted.
