Clintons Urge Women to Get Mammograms
In a husband-and-wife radio duet Saturday, President Clinton and the first lady prodded women to have regular mammograms and announced new rules to improve the quality of the lifesaving breast X-rays.
“We’re giving women and their families a powerful tool to fight breast cancer,” Clinton said.
He said funding for research, prevention and treatment has nearly doubled, adding that the recent discovery of two breast cancer genes holds great promise for finding a cure for the disease that claimed his mother’s life.
In his weekly radio broadcast, Clinton shared the microphone with his wife, Hillary, who this month joined celebrities to press breast-cancer awareness. One of her public service announcements, co-starring Candice Bergen of TV’s “Murphy Brown,” aired at the end of the sitcom last week to alert women to a new Medicare benefit that will pay for yearly breast cancer screenings starting Jan. 1.
The new regulations by the Food and Drug Administration are aimed at elevating quality-control standards for mammography facilities.
