Sponsor Rules

Share

It was most surprising to read in “INS Toughens Rules on Sponsoring Immigrants” (Oct. 21) that the new law of sponsorship is “unprecedented.” Indeed, I am a living example of needing a sponsor when I immigrated to the U.S. in 1947.

Even as a refugee from Nazi oppression, it was then impossible to immigrate to this country without an affidavit. My sponsor was not a relative but a friend who wanted to help. Since he was a captain in the U.S. Army, his pay was not sufficient for U.S. authorities, and his brother had to become a co-sponsor. Had I not found a job immediately, these two would have been responsible for my financial support until I became a citizen.

I have often wondered why such affidavits have not been required in recent years. The new law is long overdue but far from a landmark.
