Optimistic Economic Forecast Cites Need for Job Training

The South Bay needs to redevelop industrial manufacturing sites for new business and be prepared for more downsizing in the aerospace industry to survive the future, according to a study to be unveiled Thursday at the 1997 South Bay Economic Forecast Conference in Torrance.

The South Bay Economic Development Partnership, a public-private partnership, in conjunction with Cal State Dominguez Hills, has prepared a study of the region’s economy, demographics, employment potential and a prediction of the area’s growth potential.

Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp., an organization that has collaborated with several community economic development groups, said the overall forecast for the 15 incorporated cities and 934,000 residents that make up the area is favorable.

“A key issue will be work force training, how to place people coming off welfare and increasing the number of skilled workers,” said Kyser, who will present the study at the conference, to be held at the Torrance Marriott Hotel.

“We hope to identify the common problems and goals and work together to solve these issues.”
