Trustees Set Conditions on Athletic Fields Deal

Share

A deal between the city and Orange Unified School District to build athletic fields at McPherson Magnet School hit a snag last week.

District trustees, in a 5-2 vote Thursday, gave conditional approval to a 30-year lease that would allow the city to build a $2.5-million athletic center on the campus. But the trustees said they want a better escape clause in the contract before signing off on the lease.

Trustees Bill Lewis and Martin Jacobson voted against the delay.

The City Council approved the deal last week, after working for eight months to come up with a compromise plan that would provide critically needed fields for city youth and be acceptable to neighbors of the school.

Trustees, acknowledging the delicacy of the agreement, assured parents and residents that the details could be worked out.

“I’m willing to compromise with everybody else,” Trustee Robert H. Viviano said.
