A man driving north on Pacific Coast Highway between Pleasant Valley and Nauman roads in unincorporated Ventura County died Tuesday when his car slammed into a eucalyptus tree, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The man, who was described as in his 70s, was alone in the car when he lost control and drove into a tree in the center divider about 3:50 p.m.

Rescue workers said he did not have a driver’s license with him and were unable to immediately identify him.

Oxnard firefighters cut the roof off the car, then performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation as the man sat in the driver’s seat, Oxnard Fire Capt. Scott Samways said.

But the man’s injuries were extensive and he may have died instantly, paramedics said.
