Community Groups to Receive Funding

A new program called NeighborGood will provide a total of $20,000 for grants to West Valley community groups, City Councilwoman Laura Chick said Wednesday.

Grants ranging from $250 to $2,500 will be awarded in two application periods to neighborhood groups and school partnerships that are able to match the funds. The “match” can be made through cash, donations, professional services or volunteer labor, which will be valued at $10 an hour.

Chick, who previously has used her discretionary community service funds to support police programs, said she would turn the money over to local community groups next year.

“This is a wonderful way for government and the community to partner in finding real solutions to real problems, as well as to encourage community groups to improve the neighborhood,” Chick said.

Grant applications are limited to community groups or nonprofit organizations that serve the West Valley. They will be judged by a citizen review panel.

Applications will be available Oct. 31. The first grant period will close Dec. 17, officials said.
