Teachers to Fight Action to End Strike

Striking teachers vowed to “vigorously” oppose a court injunction filed by the Ontario government to try to force an end to the biggest teachers’ strike in North American history. Ontario Teachers’ Federation President Eileen Lennon warned that the union will fight the court action, which seeks to compel the province’s 126,000 unionized teachers to return to work or face fines. The motion is expected to be heard by a court Friday. However, the province’s schools will likely remain closed to more than 2 million students for at least a week while the case is heard. The unions are fighting government proposals to cut education spending and overhaul the management of the schools.
