Vigil for Princess Diana Planned in Laguna Beach

Orange County residents are invited to mourn the death of Princess Diana at a candlelight vigil Friday at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.

Participants can pen their thoughts about Diana in a book of condolences, which will be forwarded to Buckingham Palace.

Beth Leeds, a local environmentalist who is organizing the memorial service, said she felt the vigil would be a good way for Orange County residents to express their feelings about Diana, whose death early Sunday in a Paris car crash “is all people are talking about.”

“Everybody is just in shock still,” she said.

Leeds said she decided to schedule the local vigil, which will start at sunset, after reading about similar events in Los Angeles and worldwide.

“I thought, there are a lot of people who would like to express their condolences in Orange County and especially in Laguna Beach where we’re all active and concerned with the same things she was concerned with,” such as AIDS and the environment, Leeds said.

Participants are asked to bring a candle to the vigil.

Main Beach is at Coast Highway and Broadway.
