Unabomber defendant Theodore Kaczynski was transferred to a top-security federal lockup east of San Francisco at the request of his attorneys, authorities said Wednesday.

U.S. Marshal Jerry Enomoto said Kaczynski was taken in a marshal’s van from the Sacramento County Jail just before 1 p.m. and arrived at the federal institution in Pleasanton, in Alameda County, two hours later.

Enomoto said he did not know the reason for the transfer, but a sheriff’s official said Kaczynski, 55, had complained about being unable to sleep at the county jail.
