A neighbor of a 4-year-old boy saved the child’s life after he nearly drowned in a swimming pool Saturday afternoon.

Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said the boy fell “suddenly and silently” into a backyard swimming pool at about 3:50 p.m. The boy was discovered floating in the pool, face down and unconscious, by a sibling who alerted the parents.

The child was pulled from the water, and an unidentified neighbor visiting at the house administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, said Humphrey.

When paramedics arrived, “firefighters found the boy was conscious and his breathing was labored,” Humphrey said.

A Fire Department helicopter airlifted the boy from a large field at nearby Sutter Junior High School to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, were he was listed in serious but stable condition, Humphrey said.

“I would credit [the neighbor’s] decisive action as the key to the child’s survival,” Humphrey said.
