Drug Expenditures

Further to Jim Harrigan’s good letter on teen drug use (Aug. 27), in which he cites $40 billion annually as the official cost of our drug war, nothing could better illustrate its futility than a recent United Nations estimate of illicit drug profits, at $400 billion annually. At least half of that comes from U.S. dealers and their customers, outspending the forces of law and order five to one.
