Silver Lake attitude. One day at a time.

With the works of Claude Monet, the cast of “Friends” and aren’t-they-cute puppies among the subjects of 1998 calendars, Julie Hermelin and Mitchell Frank knew they needed to rise above the fray. Thus was born “Year in Space,” their calendar of posters depicting cheesy science-fiction opuses such as “Jupiter 2000” and “Journey to the Center of Uranus.”

That these films don’t exist is half the fun. The other half is that the “stars” posing in the calendar’s spacey mise en scenes hail from the tightknit Silver Lake rock scene.

Hermelin, a photographer and music video director, and her fiance Frank, who runs the club Spaceland, settled on fake sci-fi film posters complete with portentous plot synopses and miles of credits. Last November, members of Grant Lee Buffalo, Waldo the Dog Faced Boy and other Silver Lake bands, plus swells like red-hot producers the Dust Brothers (above), volunteered for a two-day photo shoot. Hermelin and Frank engaged a figurative cast of thousands to create the backdrops. The results are slick, vibrant and ironic--concepts dear to the heart of every Silver Laker worth his or her piercings.
