Student scores on last year’s Scholastic Assessment Test reached an 11-year high in the Garden Grove Unified School District.

According to district officials, scores on the math and verbal portions of the test have steadily increased since 1987, with the recently released 1997 scores surpassing state and national averages.

Students averaged 536 in math and 476 in verbal for 1997, compared with 515 in math and 473 in verbal for 1987.

Stephanie Paggi, director of instruction for grades seven through 12, attributed the improved scores to the district’s 2-year-old SAT preparation program and to rigorous classes such as pre-calculus and calculus.

District officials pointed out that the improvement is all the more significant because 40% of the test takers speak English as a second language.
