Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was probably the most outstanding woman of the last few centuries. She will be missed and mourned by millions of her admirers and supporters worldwide. Her compassion, love, concern, caring and activism for the least among us were nothing short of saintly. May she rest in eternal peace, now that God has called her from his work on Earth. We should all follow her example of how to be great in this life.

Teresa, pray for us, and all of God’s children, born and unborn!

* You have to admit, God has a great sense of timing, and a marvelous touch of irony, too, to take Mother Teresa less than 24 hours before the Princess of Wales’ funeral, after a worldwide media frenzy had already canonized her a saint. The death of Mother Teresa puts everything into its proper perspective again. There were no photo ops in the leper colonies where she worked.

* Now that the various media outlets have used up all the superlatives to describe an ex-princess of moderate talents, there are no words left to describe Mother Teresa, a woman who truly gave of her entire self to the care and cause of the impoverished. Perhaps Diana would have gone on with her charity work, lending more than her name and face as she matured, but Mother Teresa proved over and over again her commitment to humanity with her every word and deed.

* The worldwide tributes and outpourings of grief for Princess Diana reveal the values held in highest esteem by most people. We will miss this princess because of her beguiling charm and genuine compassion for the needy. She wanted to be a princess and lived a glamorous life of privilege and luxury, albeit with grace. She was an ideal princess and she deserves credit for this. Sadly, it was her playgirl antics that contributed to her untimely death.

Mother Teresa’s death also exposes the values held by most people. Tributes to her pale in comparison. She gave up an affluent life and totally devoted all her energy to help the poorest and most needy people in the world. She personified the virtue of “love thy neighbor.” She did it with saintly dedication and humility. Her legacy is a worldwide organization that will continue her charitable work.

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if holiness was more revered than glamour?

* There was no question that Mother Teresa was a magnificent human being whose compassion we would all do well to try to emulate, but how anyone could spend over 40 years among the poor of Calcutta and continue to reject birth control is completely beyond my understanding.

* When Princess Diana died, I said to myself poor Diana.

When Mother Teresa died, I said poor, poor world.
