Hazardous Waste Collection on Sunday

Residents of the West Valley and Las Virgenes areas will have the opportunity to get rid of paint and other household hazardous wastes Sunday at the Calabasas Landfill.

Los Angeles County officials will be on hand to accept items at the landfill, one of several household hazardous waste roundups planned this month throughout the county.

Staff members will take such items as motor oil, cleaners with acids or lye, car batteries, pesticides and garden herbicides, but will not accept explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials or waste from businesses.

Substances must be placed in a sturdy box, and should be in their original, labeled containers. There is a 15-gallon or 125-pound limit, officials said.

The roundup at the landfill is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, with the cooperation of the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Los Angeles, Malibu and Westlake Village.

The event was planned to give people a safe option to dispose of hazards in their homes, said Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who represents the area.

Fran Pavley, mayor of Agoura Hills and a member of the California Coastal Commission, said it is important to dispose of such waste correctly and legally.

“Residents may not be aware that it is illegal to throw household hazardous waste in the trash, sewers or storm drains because it may pollute our ground water as well as our ocean,” she said.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Calabasas Landfill, 5300 Lost Hills Road, in unincorporated Agoura.
