Opposition Retakes Stronghold in North

Opposition forces have retaken their northern stronghold after a week of fighting with the Taliban religious army that left the city battered and looted, aid workers and the opposition said. Mazar-i-Sharif was relatively peaceful as the Taliban fell back. Shopkeepers opened their doors, and people returned to the streets. But a Taliban spokesman said there was still fighting near the airport, about 10 miles away, and the front had not shifted.
