House Backs Bill on Military Projects
The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a military construction bill that includes $13 million for two improvement projects at the Port Hueneme Naval Construction Battalion Center.
One project involves overhauling 130 homes for enlisted personnel and officers, said Ventura County Congressman Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley). Many of the homes need major repairs, Gallegly said.
“It boggles the mind that a country with the most respected military in the world would allow their forces to return home to places where often the doors are falling off the hinges and the roofs leak,” Gallegly said.
In an effort to correct violations of the Clean Water Act, the military appropriations bill also would provide funds to renovate the storm water runoff system at the base.
Gallegly said the drainage system, which dates to the 1940s, has resulted in flooding of the main truck route, parking lots and buildings.
The Military Construction Act “provides our military personnel and their families with a quality of life we can be proud of and improves support facilities vital to readiness, productivity and working environments,” Gallegly said.
