Hodding Carter III to Lead Foundation
The trustees of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation elected Hodding Carter III to succeed Creed C. Black as president and chief executive officer. He is to assume the office on Feb. 1. Carter, a nationally syndicated columnist, is an award-winning journalist, media critic and educator who served as assistant secretary of State and State Department spokesman under President Carter. Since 1995 he has held the Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of Maryland. The Knight Foundation, based in Miami, supports organizations in 27 communities where the communications company founded by the Knight brothers publishes newspapers, but it is independent of those newspapers.
