Car Dealer Races Past Fund-Raising Goal
Meeting his goal of raising $1 million for Orange County schools, Joe MacPherson said Thursday his auto dealership group will continue the drive and raise $1 million more for local schools.
“The support’s been fantastic,” MacPherson said.
The businessman started the “Help Our Schools Million Dollar Drive” in 1995 after the county declared bankruptcy. Team MacPherson has since donated $1 million to more than 1,000 public, private and parochial institutions throughout the county.
Under the program, consumers buying or leasing a new or used vehicle from any Team MacPherson dealership can select a school or campus program to support. The dealers donate $50 to the identified school or program.
Saddleback Valley Unified School District received the most from the drive, collecting about $135,500. El Toro High School received the most for a single school with $17,400.
MacPherson said his group has raised about $24,400 toward the next million, and should reach that goal by July 1999.
